Post-Season Firearm Storage Tips

Image of a person cleaning a long firearm with a cloth while seated indoors. The text on the image says: “Well-stored, well-maintained firearms are ready for next hunting season.” A “Let’s Talk Guns Colorado” logo appears in the lower left corner.

When hunting season is over, make sure your firearms are properly stored to keep them in top condition and out of harm’s way.

  • • Avoid Extreme Conditions: Storing firearms in places with excessive heat, cold, or humidity can damage your firearm or ammunition.
  • • Maintenance Matters: Take firearms out once or twice a year, wipe them down with a rag, and apply gun oil. A clean, well-oiled firearm lasts longer.
  • • Safe & Unloaded Storage: Store firearms unloaded and in a secure location, like a locked gun safe or cabinet, to prevent unauthorized access.
